DECT Forum presents new Interoperability Programme at CeBIT 2001

At CeBIT 2001, the DECT Forum will present its new DECT Interoperability Programme. Under this programme, suppliers and manufacturers of DPRS (DECT Packet Radio Service) products will demonstrate smooth interoperation of their products with other suppliers’ devices. The programme was developed in partnership with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Upon successful completion of the necessary requirements, the DECT Forum will issue a certificate and grant a license to carry a trademark. Participation of the programme is voluntary and open to all DECT manufacturers and suppliers.

The DECT Forum had announced the new initiative at the annual conference of the DECT industry “DECT 2001” held 16. and 17. January 2001 in Barcelona (Spain). The “DPRS (DECT Packet Radio Service) Interoperability Certification Programme” certifies basic interoperability with DECT/DPRS products of other manufacturers. This certification is voluntary but the DECT Forum expects that most suppliers will go through this process. After completion of a number of clearly defined tests, which are based on ETSI test specifications, the DECT Forum will issue a certificate of interoperability. Together with the certificate the use of trademark is licensed. As most compliance requirements under the new R&TTE directive, this certificate is based on self-declaration. The DECT Forum certificate will require compliance to the existing standards. In addition, the product under question has to pass a number of prescribed tests when interworking with real, commercially available “Golden Devices”. The Programme has been developed in close partnership with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). It is entirely based on ETSI standards.

Peter Berwing, DECT Forum Chairman, said, “The DECT Forum understands interoperability between devices of different suppliers as a vital factor for market success. Thanks to this new programme, end-users will be able to combine DECT data equipment from different vendors.” Heinz Ochsner, Secretary of the Forum, added, “Our programme will ensure that new innovative products can be easily introduced with a minimum of requirements. The trademark which these products will bear indicates to the potential buyer that they have been demonstrated to interoperate with other products and will therefore set the basis for a high-quality low-cost DECT data market.”

Further details about this programme from the DECT Forum at CeBIT 2001, where the Forum can be found in Hall 11, Stand B64. In addition to the Interoperability programme, the DECT Forum will show a variety of DECT data products from its members (notably ALPS, Ascom, Bithium, Cetecom, D&A, Ericsson, HWN, Philips, RTX, Siemens). These include data modules and chips, DECT based network cards and terminal adaptors, base stations, web pads with integrated DECT radio, and many more.

About DECT

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a short-range radio technology for voice and data applications, standardized by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institue), which is available in more than 100 countries worldwide. The prime benefits of DECT are:

·        Proven technology with more than 70 million sold handsets worldwide by end 2000.

·        Standardised profiles for many applications in the voice and data area

·        Exclusive, protected frequency band in most European countries, regulated frequency sharing policy in all the others

Over 200 different DECT products are available across the globe, ranging from cordless telephones, wireless local loop, to data networking & multimedia products, etc.

About DPRS

DPRS (DECT Packet Radio Service) is a mode included within the DECT radio interface to provide packet oriented transmission. DECT time-slots would be used on-demand depending on the throughput needs. DECT packet transmission and standard circuit-switched transmission can exist concurrently on the same system (base station, terminal, handset, etc.)

About the DECT Forum

The DECT Forum is the Industry organisation for equipment manufacturers, suppliers and telecommunications operators using DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology, used for digital cordless telephones, wireless local loop and wireless data and Internet access. 30 international manufacturers, suppliers, and operators are members of the DECT Forum, which was established in 1997 and has local branches across the world.

The DECT Forum provides a unique platform for the exchange of experience between users, operators, regulation and standardisation bodies to ensure the sustained growth and acceptance of DECT worldwide.

Current DECT Forum members are Alcatel, ALPS, Ascom, Binatone, Bithium, Canon, Cetecom, Comlab, Dosch & Amand, Ericsson, Goodwin, Home Wireless Networks, Kessel Telecom, Lucent, OTE, Pace, Panasonic (Kyushu Matsushita), Philips, RTX, S3, Siemens, SPAL, Symbionics, Tenovis, URMET, Vtech.
