cordless market product revenues, forecast as nearly $2.4 billion by 2004 - that's success
by any man's measure. The 1996 cordless market is estimated as $1.76 billion.

FIDO
gets the bone at last !
After 12 months prevarication, the Italian CTM service, FIDO, finally received
approval for commercial service last December. In granting permission, the
Italian government imposed certain restrictions, including the commercial separation of
FIDO from its normal activities with no cross subsidies. It is now firmly up and
running....

DECT
Wireless Local Loop gaining global ground
More than 150 DECT wireless local loop systems had been deployed worldwide, as of
January 1998, according to a factsheet available on request
from the DECT Forum. The location of deployments included some 21 European
countries, 13 countries in South America, 10 in Asia-Pacific and 15 in Africa/Middle East.
The list of equipment suppliers for the deployments is dominated by just four
players - Alcatel,
Ericsson, Lucent (TRT) and Siemens. Only
three deployments are listed as having other suppliers - one each from C-DOT/NSC,
IIT/Midas/Analog Devices (see below) and DeTeWe/Hagenuk.
Massive
DECT deployment planned for Egypt
Lucent have recently scored a big success for their DECT WLL offering in Africa,
with the announcement of an order for several hundred thousand lines from Telecom Egypt, who have set
themselves the extremely aggressive target of increasing their telephone penetration
by a factor of 2 over just 5 years.
Is
DECT a European technology any more ? It seems not ...
DECT wireless local loop products developed in India took another step forward
recently, with the announcement of licensing deals for technology developed by IIT Chenai, working with
Midas and Analog Devices. Shyam Telecom have implemented products, described in a paper at
the DECT 98 World Congress.
It is understood that several other companies, including two Chinese manufacturers, have
signed production and technology transfer licences. Hot on the heels of of the C-DOT/NSC collaboration, it seems that DECT is truly
emerging as a global technology.
