14th February 2000, Farnborough UK

VTech to Launch Telecom Brand in Europe

VTech Communications Ltd one of the world’s leading consumer electronics corporations, is to launch its own brand DECT cordless telephones for the European market.

Initially, the high quality phones will be marketed in the United Kingdom and Germany. This will be done through their existing VTech Telecom sales offices based in Farnborough, United Kingdom and Neumunster, Germany.

VTech Communications Ltd is a manufacturer of high quality cordless telephones, including DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications). Since 1996 it has supplied ODM (Original Design & Manufacture) products to various world class brands in Europe.

A range of VTech branded DECT phones will be launched in July 2000 followed by a new product every month. The new models will be shown for the first time at Cebit 2000 in Hanover, Germany (Hall 17 Stand C62, from 24 February to 1 March).

The new brand will be marketed under a new modern logo and the catchy tag line ‘We’ve got people talking’. The company’s strategy for growth means that people will certainly be talking about VTech in the future.

Richard May, VTech’s European Sales & Marketing Director explains:

"DECT products are the first step to building a VTech branded telecommunications division in Europe. We plan to enter other key markets, especially the wireless market. This is nothing new for us, as we already manufacture products for a number of PTT’s and leading brands."

In the US VTech uses its own brand name and is market leader in the North American 900 MHz cordless telephone market. It recently launched it’s new range of 2.4 GHz WDCT (World Digital Cordless Telecommunications) products at CES 2000, in Las Vegas.

In January VTech Holdings Ltd announced the acquisition of Lucent Technologies’ consumer phone manufacturing business which designs, develops and manufactures consumer telephones. This, together with a licensing agreement to use the AT&T brand name, strengthens VTech’s position in the United States and Canada as one of the leading consumer communication companies.

Richard May continues "VTech has one of the largest manufacturing sites in China with a factory capable of producing in excess of 1.5 million phones per month. The recent acquisition of Lucent gives additional manufacturing capacity in Mexico".

VTech is one of the world’s leading consumer electronics corporations. It designs, manufactures, markets and sells electronic learning and telecommunications products through its extensive international distribution network. It is known worldwide for its electronic learning products for children.

Founded in Hong Kong in 1976, VTech had annual sales in the 1998/1999 fiscal year of approximately US$1 billion. It has subsidiaries and offices in 13 countries with more than 20,000 employees, including 1000 professionals in research and development. The group invested over US$48 million in R&D during the last financial year and launches an average of between 80 and 100 new products each year.
