NBC Olympics, Inc. Selects Avaya Voice Solutions in Eight-Year, Five-Game Deal

Avaya, the former Enterprise Networks Group that will be spun off from Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - news) later this year, today announced that NBC Olympics, Inc. has selected the DEFINITY® Enterprise Communications Server (ECS) and the INTUITY(TM) AUDIX® messaging system to support its telecommunications needs for the next five Olympic Games.

The eight-year contract, valued at $1.3 million, begins this year with the games in Sydney, Australia, and includes Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin, Italy and at the yet-to-be determined location of the 2008 Olympic Games.

With the DEFINITY ECS, NBC Olympics, Inc. can choose its preferred communications protocol, whether it's moving voice, video and data traffic over the public-switched network, the Internet, intranets, extranets or Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). In combination with the DEFINITY system, INTUITY AUDIX voice messaging lets NBC staff members keep up with time-critical information from any Olympic venue by dialing into their mailbox from a wireless, cellular or hard-wired connection.

``We chose Avaya because we're confident in their ability to support us anywhere in the world with the latest, most innovative technology throughout the eight years of the contract,'' said Ken Fuller, Director of Broadcast and Network Operations for NBC Olympics, Inc.

For the Sydney Olympics, DEFINITY communications servers will be located in NBC's Broadcasting Center and the NBC Field Shop. The servers, along with INTUITY AUDIX messaging, will support approximately 700 staff members and will be networked back to NBC's New York headquarters in Rockefeller Center.

As part of a separate contract, NBC Olympics will use Avaya's business wireless communications systems, which are designed to meet the specific wireless standard of each of the five Olympic cities. In Sydney, the DECT 2 system will provide approximately 30 NBC staff members with communications mobility. In Salt Lake City, an Avaya TransTalk® Digital Wireless System will deliver ``walk and talk'' connections. The TransTalk system allows users to roam an average of 700 ft. from the base station or further in an open-air environment. The European sites are best served by the European DECT system, and plans for its utilization in Athens and Turin are in the works. All of Avaya business wireless systems link to the DEFINITY servers, giving staff members all the features of wired phones, including multiple lines and hold, transfer and conference capabilities.

Avaya will also provide project management, maintenance and on-site technicians to NBC throughout the course of each Olympiad.
