15th September 2000, Solothurn, Switzerland

One Web Site for All DECT Related Information

All information related to DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) can now be accessed through one single Web address www.dectweb.com.  Visitors have access to a wealth of information about the markets, technology and products of this technology, which enjoys an increasing global success.

The DECT Forum – the alliance of DECT manufacturers, suppliers, and operators – and DECTweb – the global on-line DECT community – have announced close co-operation in their presence on the World Wide Web, reflecting the increasing global success of DECT and a common desire to provide a comprehensive resource for information for the industry, accessible around the world.

As of September 2000 the DECT Forum website will be hosted as part of DECTweb, providing benefits to members of both organisations, in terms of access to a greater level of information resources, as well as increased opportunities for personal interaction.

The high, targeted, traffic levels of DECTweb – over 0.5 million hits in 1999 – will offer a wider exposure of DECT Forum activities, potentially attracting new Forum members, whilst the official endorsement of DECTweb by DECT Forum is expected to result in an increase in industry advertising sponsorship, enabling DECTweb to continue its free service to the global DECT community.

Walter Tuttlebee, Editor of DECTweb and a Chairmen at the recent Bluetooth conference in Monte Carlo, observed:
“Interest in DECT has increased significantly over the past year. The enormous marketing hype associated with Bluetooth has increased general awareness of the capabilities of all short-range wireless technologies. The similarity of base technology between DECT and Bluetooth has become increasingly appreciated – indeed, the SIMcard sized DECT module shown at CeBIT stimulated great interest. The maturity of DECT technology has meant that, for some applications, DECT can meet advanced requirements today, particularly in the area of data networking, rather than companies needing to wait for Bluetooth to mature“.

Peter Berwing, Chairman of the DECT Forum, added:
“There is so much change in the industry that one single source of information for both the industry and their customers is vital. The past year has seen several companies introducing DECT-based data products, encompassing innovative applications such as wireless card-readers, e-mail devices, SoHo data/voice networking and Internet access – as well as the continued development of a higher performance and lower cost basic DECT product, the digital cordless phone. The ITU’s adoption of DECT as a 3G air interface will offer further product evolution possibilities in the coming years, as today’s 552 kbit/s data capability is extended to 2Mbit/s.”

The coming year is expected to see increased availability of wireless office networking products, built around the new DPRS (DECT Packet Radio Service) protocols. DPRS will become part of the base DECT standard at its next iteration
