Santa Clara, Ca, USA - 4th September 2001

Siemens Selects National Semiconductor's Single Chip DCT Baseband IC for Its New DECT and WDCT Handsets

National Semiconductor today announced that National's new SC14408 baseband controller is a key component of the Siemens Gigaset(TM) 4000 comfort handset. National's SC14408 is the market's first single chip DCT baseband IC with embedded Flash designed in 0.25 micron CMOS. The SC14408 combines 3Mb of embedded flash with a powerful CompactRISC(TM) core, allowing Siemens' new handsets to have the highest degree of software flexibility available. Siemens has introduced its handset into the two most rapidly growing DCT markets in the world: DECT 1.9 GHz in Europe and WDCT in the ISM 2.4GHz band in the U.S.

"The advantage of using National's new SC14408 baseband is that it enables Siemens to build handsets for the US and European markets based on one platform,'' said Rainer Nagel, Vice President Product Marketing Cordless Products of Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group. "The 3Mb on-chip Flash can support multiple language display menus and it offers the possibility of walkie talkie and SMS (Short Message Service) options, new features in cordless phones.''

The SC14408 is the only product on the market that has all the latest digital cordless telephone features embedded on one chip, such as programmable radio interface, arm-length hands free, power management and data support. National also improved the direct memory access (DMA) for DECT data applications in products such as the latest information appliances.

"The new SC14408 product family offers Siemens flexibility, fast time-to-market and improved production costs,'' said Arend van der Weijden, director of marketing for National's cordless products. ``The CompactRISC core has the performance to support the latest features like SMS and walkie talkie. The plug-in compatible ROM versions of the SC14408 allow for the lowest cost after ramp up with the embedded flash.''

The SC14408 is manufactured at National's plant in South Portland, Maine and has second source manufacturing secured at TSMC in Taiwan.
