HomeRF reorganises - but which way will Europe go ?
The
HomeRF group has announced a reorganisation to better promote the technology,
under which 6 promoter companies have been identified, including Siemens and
National Semiconductors, both leading DECT players. It will be
interesting to see how home networking plays out both sides of the Atlantic - at
present HomeRF seems to be gaining momentum in the USA, whilst Europe has seen
recent product launches based on DECT from Home Wireless
Networks and Pace.

Tality pulls IPO - but watch this space...
Tality,
formerly the Electronic Design Services group of Cadence Design Systems
and an active contributor to the DECT business through their Symbionics activity
in Cambridge, have announced a delay to their IPO, planned for the week of 9th
October. The recent volatility in the markets was cited
as the reason for the decision. Following the success of the RTX
Telecom IPO earlier this year (see below) and
subsequent similar telecom offerings, Tality could be another company to watch.

Ericsson launch WAP Gateway
Ericsson
have announced the launch of a WAP Gateway product, targetted at corporate
users. The product can support virtually anything mobile office
users want to do which requires real-time access to corporate intranet services.
It creates opportunities for mobile offices by providing mobile users with
access to corporate directories, calendars, news services, and e-mail.
Perhaps the significance for DECT is the fact that DECT was approved last year
by the WAP Forum as a bearer mechanism; availability of such servers in
corporate environments where DECT is already well established could open up
significant new markets for WAP services over DECT products.

Binatone Product Builds Success in the UK Market
The
Eurotel 3200 product from Binatone has succeeded in securing Binatone a strong
place in the UK market, with 20% market share, according to recently published
figures from market research company GfK. The product has also
recently won awards from the 'What Cellphone' and 'Stuff' magazines.
Reflecting our story from August, (see below) Binatone
Sales & Marketing Executive Dino Lalvani lamented the shortage of
semiconductors as having hampered growth in what was in any case clearly a
successful period for the company.
