HomeRF Demos Voice Call
Well,
HomeRF is getting there --- but for those in the DECT industry who remember that
the first DECT product back in 1992, nearly 10 years ago, was a wireless LAN
from Olivetti the news that Siemens has demonstrated a fully functioning
integrated wireless LAN and voice telephone call cannot be terribly
exciting. The demo - in the laboratory, rather than a developed product -
was of a voice phone call operating over HomeRF technology into a Proxim Voice
Data Module gateway into a standard telephone line. FIeld trial
systems with broadband operators are anticipated for autumn 2001.

terminal was launched in October last year at Cartes 2000 and is a portable
electronic payment terminal capable of operating as a short-range device, using
DECT technology, or as a wide area payment device using GSM. Teaming up
with Smartel, SAGEM are hoping to expand their market for this product into
Italy. Smartel has ordered 40,000 GD900 terminals, introducing them into
the market around now.

DECT rules relaxed in Oz
1st
July sees a new 'Class Licensing' system for cordless telephone services (CTS)
coming into operation in Australia, promising a further acceleration in the take
up of DECT in that part of the world. The 1.9 GHz band in Australia has
traditionally been home to microwave fixed link installations and CTS users have
officially been required to pay a one-off licence fee - in practice many
thousands of installations have been made without this. Ericsson had
previously negotiated a bulk pre-paid licensing deal to accelerate DECT
sales. The new arrangement is expected to increase take up even further,
as well widening market access for other manufacturers.

DECT Wireless Local Loop in Russia
Whilst
the general economic climate in Asia over the past year or two have served to
restrain the opportunities for DECT (and other technologies for that matter !)
in the wireless local loop market, activities in Russia in the meantime have
been quietly moving forward. In particular the Borodino
system from Goodwin, the subject of a press release from the company earlier
in the year, and which received certification for use in the Russian Federation,
has now been deployed as a pilot system in the region of Lobnya, Moscow.
Plans are afoot to upgrade the system to support 90kB/s data by end 2001.
