Butsilver.gif (1501 bytes) Kirk Presents New Directions at CeBIT
Kirk Telecom presented their new directions in DECT at this year's CeBIT event, outlining their vision for the future and their plans for DECT products built around three application areas - HomeCom, BusinessCom and MetriCom - essentially domestic, business and data product lines.

Differing stories about Bluetooth seem to be emerging from Hannover.  With "hundreds" of Bluetooth-enabled products on show some of the coverage at least seems to be focusing on the lack of interoperability between different manufacturers' products - an important lesson here for DECT DPRS products, and perhaps an endorsement for the new DECT Forum interoperability initiative, being launched at CeBIT.  Other reporters seems to have been counting the number of Bluetooth products that just didn't seem to communicate (- perhaps a function of the number of devices in close proximity ?).  However, the fact that so many products are on show and the interest generated must be good for the wireless data industry.

The Walkie Talkie and SMS DECT phones, which Siemens announced at the DECT2001 Conference in Barcelona earlier this year, are now on show at CeBIT in Hannover.

The Gigaset 4010/4015 products come in the now well established Comfort and Classic options and feature several really useful features, such as:

  • SMS text messaging

  • Text-to-speech

  • Walkie Talkie mode

  • Voice activation

  • Missed call indication

  • Can send an alert to a mobile when it "hears" a child crying

  • Automatic network provider prefix

These new products should help keep Siemens at the forefront of this still-developing market.

Butsilver.gif (1501 bytes) Butsilver.gif (1501 bytes) Telepoint Revisited ?
Anyone remember Telepoint ?  The short-range wireless telephone service supported by CT2, the predecessor of DECT, that tried and failed in the UK, then France, then Hong Kong - with the same lessons having to be learned each time.  In each place the advent of low-cost cellular eventually killed it off.   Public access DECT in some ways resembles Telepoint - the closest this has come to success has been FIDO in Italy, where it was deployed quite widely before regulatory issues killed it off.

Well, according to an article in the New York Times, it appears that in the USA folk have re-invented it as data-telepoint, using 802.11 to provide high rate data at "thousands of access points across the country".  Will it fly, or will it follow the fate of its voice counterpart ?

Wavelink Communications have launched the KIRK dect-z System 500 DECT cordless adjunct system into the Australian market.   The system offers a simple, flexible and cost effective cordless solution to mid-sized sites. Giving any phone system up to 8 cordless extensions, the system provides full site coverage via a central base station and up to 6 cordless repeaters. Flexibility and significant cabling cost savings are assured, as telephone cabling is only required to the central base station.

At CeBIT 2001, the DECT Forum will present its new DECT Interoperability Programme. Under this programme, suppliers and manufacturers of DPRS (DECT Packet Radio Service) products will demonstrate smooth interoperation of their products with other suppliers’ devices. The programme was developed in partnership with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Upon successful completion of the necessary requirements, the DECT Forum will issue a certificate and grant a license to carry a trademark.
